Kim Gregory, 58,
former
Nevada State Contractors
Board
chairman (1989-2001)
passed
away on Sept. 2, 2008. He
had
been battling pancreatic
cancer.
Gregory, a Las Vegas
resident
since 1973, was president
and
chief executive officer of
Hansen
Mechanical Contractors, one
of
the largest mechanical
contractors
in Nevada.
Gregory worked as a
mechanical contractor for
37
years. His company, which
he
sold to EMCOR in 1980, did
mechanical, air conditioning
and
refrigeration and plumbing
and
heating work for many of
the
major hotels in Las Vegas. In
an
interview with the NSCB’s
Billboard
newsletter
(Fall/Winter
2007), Gregory credited
his
success and that of other
contractors to being “qualified
in
their trade… having some level
of
business experience and
understanding
that they have to complete
their projects… You can
not
walk away from a mistake.”
The
successful businessman also
felt
that contractors should be
aware
of their limits with respect to
their
financial interests, or
knowledge
before taking on projects. He
said
contractors need to understand
the
banking business and legal
aspects
concerning their
businesses.
When Gregory assumed the
chair of the NSCB in 1996,
he
said he wanted to achieve
three
objectives:
• Help the general public and
the
Nevada Legislature better
understand what the Board
does;
• Provide consistent responses
to
problems that arise and;
• Identify and implement
new
problem-solving tools and
methods.
“Basically,” Gregory said at
the
time, “this job is a matter of
being
fair, honest and getting the
word
out about what we do.” He saw
his
role as a catalyst that would
turn
the Board into a cohesive,
problem-solving force.
“Kim was an icon in the
industry. This is a huge loss,”
said
Margaret Cavin, chair of
the
Nevada State Contractors
Board.
“He was on the Board when
I
started, and I learned a lot
from
him. When that door to our
Board
meetings opened and he walked
in,
it was down to business, and
both
homeowners and contractors
benefited from his leadership.
We
became friends over the years.
I
will miss him dearly.”
“Kim Gregory was chairman
of
the Board through a period
of
tremendous growth and change
in
Nevada’s construction
industry,”
Margi Grein, executive officer
of
the NSCB, remembers. “He
demonstrated unique
leadership
qualities, perseverance
and
integrity to gain respect
from
community leaders,
legislators
and the contracting
community.
He was an outstanding
chairman,
great mentor and above all
he
was my friend.”
In addition to being on
the
NSCB and CEO of Hansen
Mechanical Contractors,
Gregory had been a
three-term
president of the Sheet
Metal
Contractors Association
and
chairman of building and
grounds for 15 years on
the
Board of Trustees at The
Meadows School.
The Gregory family has
requested for those wishing
to
honor Kim’s life, to make
donations to Stop Cancer,

Portland cement is a generic term
used to describe a
variety of building materials valued
for their strong
adhesive properties when mixed with
water. Employees
who work with Portland cement are at
risk of developing
skin problems, ranging from mild and
brief to severe and
chronic. OSHA recently released a new
guidance
document,
“Preventing Skin Problems from
Working
with Portland
Cement,” aimed at helping employers
and
employees understand the hazards
associated with
Portland cement and the applicable OSHA
regulations.
